Why seek a neuropsychological evaluation?

Academic subjects are really byproducts of cognitive processing abilities. Difficulties in the processing areas that are necessary for success in specific subject areas raise the probability of problems in that subject.

Identification of the deficient processing abilities is the first step to understanding how to address academic problems. Once these weaknesses are identified, then individualized or differentiated instructional strategies can be developed to target those areas.

Similarly, identification of executive functioning deficits-that is, those processes that regulate students’ behavior, thinking, emotions, and access to their abilities-further helps to create a remediation plan that removes students’ obstacles to success.

Neuropsychological evaluations provide the most comprehensive information on an individual's cognitive processing abilities, executive functions, and personality issues. 

Psycho-educational evaluations can offer important information; however, they do not assess the full range of executive functions, an area often essential in identifying student's obstacles to learning.

Why seek a neuropsychological evaluation from me?

The Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory of cognitve processing abilities is the most current and highly regarded system for understanding an indi dual's abilities. The Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses (PSW) approach to analyzing the findings of the evaluation is considered to be the best science and best practice way of understanding an indivdiual's cognitive abilities. Moreover, it provides a way to directly translate the findings of an evaluation  into instructional strategies that are individualized and tailored to your student. 

I have expertise in utilizing the above method of assessment and have been involved in training professionals across the state in this approach.

When there are questions about the presence of a learning disability (i.e. dyslexia; auditory processing), attention deficits, or executive functioning/processing issues, we may decide as well to include a comprehensive psycho-educational or neuropsychologically based evaluation in order to determine eligibility for a 504 plan or IEP. Academic accommodations like extended time can significantly impact school performance and make the difference on standardized tests like the SAT or ACT and subsequent college acceptan
